PLC5 End of Life Announcement
Do You Use Rockwell PLC5 Software?
Rockwell announced the end of support for their legacy PLC5 Software on December 31, 2025. This means they will no longer provide the software or include it in any of the toolkits used by controls houses and end users.
This has been communicated by Rockwell throughout 2025 so it is not a new piece of information.
What Are Recommended Next Steps?
Review your current PLC and software licenses.- Purchase your own perpetual license for whichever site(s) are running PLC5.
- Begin migrating your affected facilities to a supported, modern version.
What Challenges Can I Expect In the Migration to a new PLC?
Modern systems have built in tools to assist with the actual migration process but unexpected challenges can arise.
Hardware
Document hardware to confirm compatibility with new software. This includes I/O devices and other
communication interface hardware. New hardware may be necessary.
Code Conversion
This happens automatically with a built-in migration tool, but careful review is required to ensure data is completely ported. Legacy code can be heavily patched or inefficient and may need to re-written.
Mapping the New System
Ensure appropriate adaptors and wiring is updated to the new system. Make sure migrated code matches the new configurations, and tag names are accurate.
Documentation
Catalog parts for existing system, I/O points and document programming standards to ensure consistency. Document the the layout of the upgraded hardware and software interfaces.
