Software Project Manager

Job Description

The Software Customer Project Team Lead plays a pivotal role in delivering customized software solutions for material handling systems. This position is responsible for leading a team of developers, coordinating with internal stakeholders, and ensuring successful execution of customer projects. The ideal candidate is both a technical expert and a strong communicator, capable of managing project timelines, quality, and client relationships.

Specific Duties

Project Leadership

  • Serve as the primary technical and project lead for customer-facing software implementations.
  • Plan and manage the end-to-end software development lifecycle for assigned projects, from requirements gathering to final deployment.
  • Collaborate with customers to understand project requirements and ensure alignment with company standards and capabilities.
  • Translate customer requirements into actionable development tasks, leveraging existing software where possible and identifying areas for customization.

Team Management

  • Lead and mentor a team of software developers, fostering collaboration and high performance.
  • Assign and monitor tasks, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.
  • Provide guidance and troubleshooting support to the team, resolving technical and project-related challenges.
  • Travel to site to support software project engineers if required.

Technical Oversight

  • Drawing on expertise on the material handling industry to provide guidance on functionality and design to both the project team and the development team.
  • Review and approve design specifications, code, and test plans to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Ensure integration of the software with ERP, warehouse management systems (WMS), and other customer systems.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize processes, reduce development effort, and increase the reuse of standard software components.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Act as the primary point of contact for the customer regarding software project progress, issues, and updates.
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g., engineering, controls, and operations) to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Report project status, risks, and opportunities to senior leadership.

Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to the improvement of internal processes, tools, and standards for customer software projects.
  • Use experience with customer installations to improve the base DLN offerings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science / engineering or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with 2+ years in a leadership or project management role.
  • Existing expertise or willingness and ability to learn Warehouse workflows (receiving, put-away, picking, packing, sortation, and shipping).
  • Warehouse integrations such at PLCs, Pick-To-Light, ASRS, Cranes, Carousels, Robots, etc. and the resource balancing algorithms to support them is a big plus.
